Welcome to Laura's Protect the Pets Page!

Hi! My name is Laura. I live in the Austin, Texas area. I own 3 Yorkshire Terriers. I am very
concerned about the way that Pet Stores, Breeders, pet owners,
and Puppy mills are treating our animals. My dogs are all our family pets as well as
our best friends. We play fetch and chase, they have a huge
back yard to play in, and children to love them. These puppy
mills keep their animals in cages, dirty and malnutritioned.
It is an awful site to see.
About 8 years ago, I was looking to buy another Yorkie and drove
45 miles to George West, Texas to look at some pups that were in
the paper. When I got to the address, it was a trailer built on
stilts, lots of junk cars and stuff in the yard. Under one tree, there was a Husky/Wolf tied to it. Further off, there was a German Sheppherd tied to another tree. I believe that there were about 5 dogs total, tied to one tree or another. I proceeded up the stairs to the front door. They brought out about 10 pups(Yorkies). They had just recently purchased them from San Antonio and now decided to sell them. The pups looked healthy enough, but were covered with flees and were in need of a good bath. You could hear other dogs barking far off. Before I left, I asked about the other dogs and they finally took me down to look at them. Underneath the trailer, there was a cement platform where they set up about 10 pens. There were metal strips about 7 feet long that were the walls to these pins. They were about 3 feet wide and 7 feet long. There were 10 or more dogs in each of these pens. These dogs, didn't get any sunlight under the trailer, couldn't even see out because of the metal walls which were about 3 feet high. There were Yorkies, Shitzu's, Palmeranians, and
Poodles. They needed baths really bad and looked like they hadn't
been brushed or attended to in a long time. They were jumping all
around wanting attention. It was obvious that they didn't get much
of that from their owners. I really felt bad for those dogs. They
could have been beautiful animals if they had been taken care of.
I don't believe that people like that should be allowed to have
pets. It just is not fair to the animals.
Animals are a gift that should be treated properly. They rely
totally on their owners to feed them, clean them, and love them.
If they don't get that, what can they do about it? Nothing. It
is just like children. You have the responsibility as a parent
and as a pet owner to treat them with care and love them.
