You can buy Oster clippers at your local Walmart, or beauty supply, or pet store. They come with attachments for the different cuts and instructions on use and care.
The Yorkies hair on their ears should be trimmed with the clippers (no attachment) halfway down, front and back, to form a triangle on top. This will also help keep the ears up and from flopping. It is a good idea to keep them trimmed like this all the time when small puppies. Most breeders will start trimming the hair at around 4 to 5 weeks and keep it trimmed down to keep the weight off the ears so that the puppies can learn to bring up the ear in the upright position.
The pads of the Yorkies feet should be trimmed to keep stickers and other objects from getting caught in the foot. You can trim under the foot inbetween the pads and then turn the foot upright and trim the foot in a half circle in front to give the feet a round fluffy look. This will also help keep the hair off the ground and clean.
I always trim around the private parts of the dogs, male and female. This helps keep them clean and free of drips. Really nice when they jump up on your neighbors laps that have come to visit!
Depending on your puppies habits, it should be given a bath every 5 to 8 days. Use shampoo and cream rinse to keep the hair tangle free and soft. You may blowdry the hair to keep it straight and pretty. There are conditioner sprays you can put on before blowdrying to help keep the hair from drying out and getting brittle.
The nails should be kept trimmed. Long nails can get caught in the hair, and tangled and broken. Also, the nails can get caught on other objects, which could cause injury to your dog.
If a flea or tick product is needed, you can usually find a good dip to use after the cream rinse, or a spray once the hair is dry. The Vet now sales products taken by mouth in the form of a pill that will help the dog stay free of flea's and tick's. Your best bet is to buy an insecticide and sprayer from your local feed store to spray on the yard when your pets are all removed. They should not be brought back into the yard for around 2 hours or until all the spray is dry. This should help to kill all insects roaming your area and keep your pets free of those little pests.
TEETH
Get the puppy used to teeth cleaning when young. Start brushing their teeth with a small dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste. Do not use human toothpaste on dogs. It can make them sick. You can also learn from a vet or experienced groomer how to clean the teeth of plague. Tools for teeth cleaning may be purchased in a cataloge for pet supplies. If the teeth are brushed and cleaned regularly, your pet will have healthier teeth that will last longer in it's life. Nyla-bones are also a great way to get their teeth to stay cleaner. They have dental Nyla-bones that the dogs love to chew on. They break up in small pieces which are easier for the dogs stomach to digest then rawhides. Rawhides break up in big pieces and can upset their stomachs.
